UPDATED, 2:15 PM, 7/11/16: It may be even worse than it looks for the GOP, if history is a guide. I have already showed you how far ahead of the last two presidential cycles the Democrats are. But because they have so many groups doing voter registration this time -- locals such as the Culinary as well as national activists -- and the GOP only really has the party (such as it is) and Engage NV, consider what could happen during the next four months: ►On July 1, 2008, the GOP deficit was 55,560...
GOP Rep. Cresent Hardy, considered one of the more vulnerable incumbents in the country, is in a dead heat with Democratic state Sen. Ruben Kihuen, according to a new poll from the National Republican Congressional Committee. Hardy has 38 percent and Kihuen has 36 percent, meaning that about a quarter of the electorate chose a minor candidate or is undecided. The survey also shows Donald Trump ahead of Hillary Clinton by 7 percent in the strongly Democratic district that President Obama twice...
The Senate Majority PAC, a Democratic-aligned group, is going up with a new ad hitting Rep. Joe Heck for being soft on banks. The new ad comes after former Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto touted her record of holding banks accountable after the recession. (I looked at that claim.) The latest spot -- part of a $900,000 buy -- signals that Democrats are banking on this issue. (Try the veal!)
After successfully winning Nevada, a key pivot point in the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton's campaign has new leadership in the We Matter State. The team that won the caucus, blunting Bernie Sanders' momentum after New Hampshire and putting Clinton on the inexorable path to victory, was led by Emmy Ruiz, the state boss; Jorge Neri, the organizing director; and Michelle White, the political director. Neri was elevated to state director after Ruiz assumed the Clinton reins in Colorado...
One month after its first radio ad used brutal language to try to alienate Hispanics from the woman who would be the first Latina U.S. senator, the group is up with a new spot. This time, America's PAC, funded by conservative Wisconsin businessman Richard Uihlein (who is also a Rep. Joe Heck donor), goes after former Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto for raising her own pay. This claim already has been called "Mostly False" by PolitiFact, not to mention an AG can't raise her salary -- the...
A survey taken for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee shows the party's nominees for Congress and president leading in Rep. Joe Heck's swing congressional district. These are the first public polling results from Nevada in the White House race since both primary races ended (there wasn't much before, either), and they indicate Hillary Clinton likely is ahead of Donald Trump in the state. Both the congressional and presidential contests have a substantial number of undecided voters...
In a pair of school choice lawsuit filings within the last week, the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada has raised questions about Treasurer Dan Schwartz's admission of ex parte conversations with state Supreme Court justices. The ACLU argues in its filings, which are below and reported by the Review-Journal, that the expedited hearing schedule "does not allow the parties either the time or space to adequately address the complex and weighty constitutional violations at the heart of this...
Las Vegas business leaders received a survey Monday morning sent by the Metro Chamber on behalf of the Oakland Raiders that asks about the proposed stadium but leaves out one teeny piece of the puzzle: How people feel about public money being spent. The survey gauges how avid sports and Raiders fans people are, how they feel about the location of the proposed stadium and the all-important ability to tailgate. But how people feel about half or more of the cost being borne by taxpayers? Nada....
UPDATED, 5 PM: Secretary of State says Bernie would have to declare his candidacy; getting signatures not enough. From spox: A person other than the candidate may file an independent candidate petition with the Secretary of State’s office; however, in order for the candidate’s name to appear on the ballot, the candidate must sign and file a declaration of candidacy, which is separate from the independent candidate petition.  Accordingly, no independent candidate can appear on the ballot without...
Shortly before solar companies were poised to file signatures this week for a petition to undo a controversial regulatory decision, Gov. Brian Sandoval had a news release on his desk.  It announced an agreement between the solar companies and the state, one that would have allowed the rooftop customers to be grandfathered for 20 years at their current rates and in exchange the Bring Back Solar coalition would drop its initiative to undo a Public Utilities Commission decision to gradually...
