I kept saying I never had any doubts how the case would turn out. But I doubted. And I was afraid. I knew that what John Bailey, the lawyer for ex-Gov. Kenny Guinn’s son, was trying to do was outrageous and unethical and wouldn’t be sanctioned in any other profession: Lying in court documents about a journalist’s integrity to smear her and chill her reporting.  And I firmly believed that the state Supreme Court had opted to consider Bailey’s petition for extraordinary relief mostly to squash...
Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, who last week talked about picketers being shot and how she would “hire thugs” if she were running the Cosmopolitan, said last month she carries weapons in gun-free zones, sneered at the governor for making the wrong GOP chairman choice and made an anatomically impossible reference to the chancellor, among other off-color and bizarre remarks. Fiore, pictured at right with her close friend and Assembly hopeful Victoria Seaman, whom she touted in her speech to the...
Remember this case? Despite an attempt by Jeff Guinn and his lawyers to tarnish journalist Dana Gentry's reputation with a "when did you stop beating your wife?" type of inquiry, the state Supreme Court has quashed the attempt and in so doing likely strengthened Nevada's shield law.   The decision is attached.
So what will high-profile Nevadans be giving thanks for on Thursday? I happen to know: ►Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: For John Boehner’s Tea Party anarchists. For Sharron Angle (never stop thanking God for her). For being able to interview political editor candidates at the Las Vegas Sun. ►Sen. Dean Heller: For re-election being five years away. For No Labels, so no real permanent positions. For his ultra-professional staff. ►Rep. Steven Horsford: For modern medicine. For North Las Vegas’...
There are six real conservatives and the same number of "true liberals" in the Nevada Legislature, according to one of the older conservative rating groups in the country. The American Conservative Union used 18 Assembly votes and 15 Senate votes, counting votes for taxes, gay marriage and the big NV Energy bill against lawmakers. The full report, attached here, found no one had a 100 percent rating. The conservatives named were: State Sens. Don Gustavson and James Settelmeyer and Assemblymen...
Rep. Joe Heck, who has been pummeled by progressives on immigration reform, met Monday evening with a broad spectrum of groups and presented his own bill. I've learned that the meeting, which took place at a Humana office in Henderson, was attended by two dozen or so people, including progressives, gamers, business types and labor leaders. Heck retierated to the group that he would not sign on to the Democratic bill, House Resolution 15 and that it would not pass because Speaker John Beohner...
