Responding to a report from CNN's John King that Sheldon Adelson may spend $100 million to help the GOP take the U.S. Senate, the Las Vegas Sands chairman's top political aide flatly denied it. "We are not spending $100 million on Senate races," Andy Abboud told me Monday. "We do not have a budget." But Abboud all but confirmed King's story about GOP consultants and others meeting with Adelson, expressing anger that anyone would be talking out of school. "There is no set budget for the cycle...
A couple of Republican state Senate candidates have begun distributing pieces to voters to try to frame the debate in districts critical to determining state Senate control. Following in Michael Roberson's footsteps a couple of weeks after he set the tone in the other competitive district, the minority leader's handpicked candidates, Becky Harris and Patricia Farley, have kicked off their own general election campaigns. The pieces they are dropping at voter doors are attached here. Harris,...

News item: Nevada’s unemployment rate falls to 7.7 percent, the lowest it has been in six years. Nevada ranks second in the country for the percentage change in its jobless rate over the last year – 2.3 percent Modern Nevada was built on a fantasy, so it’s no surprise that the recovery, or “comeback” as Gov. Brian Sandoval calls it, has been based on an illusion. Among the magicians who have become expert at the sleight of hand necessary are lawmakers, especially Democrats, who have posed as...
Today's must-read, as painful as it is, is the Las Vegas Sun's profile of Assemblywoman Michele Fiore. Seven points: 1. Sometimes you just let a person talk. That's what Kyle Roerink did, and Fiore, as ever, indicted herself. 2. That headline? "A true Nevada political rise." Really? To where has she risen, pray tell? Most number of idiotic comments for such a short time in politics? She has had plenty, and it's not the first time she has bragged about breaking gun laws. (Maybe we should have...
More on this Sunday in my column.
The Rothenberg Political Report has shifted its rating for Rep. Joe Heck's district from "Lean Republican" to "Republican Favored," which could be a blow to Democrat Erin Bilbray's fundraising. RPR is one of the more respected firms in the country, and its words are heeded in DC and elsewhere. The rating change comes after Bilbray's tepid second quarter of fundraising that leaves her $1 million behind Heck in cash on hand -- $1.5 million to $500,000. Here's how RPR sees the race: NV 3 (Heck, R...
