Welcome to the Weekly Report.
This week:
1. Insiders on: Heck vs. Masto
2. Insiders on: Blowback from Session ‘15
3. Insiders on: What is the AG up to?
4. Insiders on: Will the governor be Brian Sandoval when Session ’17 begins?
Campaign ’16 has begun. What, you didn’t notice? (Danny Tarkanian already is talking to people about CD3, for instance. Fifth time the charm vs. Michael Roberson?)
So I have assembled a large group of campaign experts from business and gaming, the political...
Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen, once lobbied by Sen. Harry Reid to hire his son as city attorney, now wants to give Josh Reid a lengthy contract extension with built-in salary boosts that eventually would amount to more than a 20 per cent increase.
Hafen put the item on next week's council agenda right after a standard item for Reid the Younger's annual evaluation, asking his colleagues to approve a second contract extension for the city attorney, who makes $208,000 a year and would be at more than...
Eight Assembly Republicans were notified Wednesday that their voices were heard on wiretaps in an ongoing probe focused on GOP consultant Tony Dane, multiple sources confirmed.
None of the octet is currently targeted in the investigation, which began after Assemblyman Chris Edwards told police he believed he was the victim of an extortion plot. Dane has had his offices searched and files and equipment confiscated by authorities.
The Republicans who received the letters, Wednesday, a police...
Attorney General Adam Laxalt will host a presidential candidates event in Northern Nevada this summer, with half a dozen White House hopefuls already confirmed.
Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, John Bolton (now out, but Laxalt used to work for him.), George Pataki and Ben Carson have RSVP'd, I'm told, while Jeb Bush said he has a scheduling conflict, and Rand Paul will be overseas.
The Aug. 15 event at the Corley Ranch in Gardnerville will be a Basque barbecue, an homage to the attorney...
I've confirmed that ex-Gov. Jeb Bush will be in Henderson on June 27, 12 days after he makes his announcement (suspense that kills) on whether he is running for president.
Bush, I'm told, will be in Nevada after stops in the other three early states: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
And his son, George P. Bush, also will be making a Nevada campaign stop for the candidate's "Jeb Announcement Tour" on June 17.
Despite the Legislature's failure to pass presidential primary bill, we still...
On the day before the 2015 Legislature adjourned, two Republican Assembly members left the building and did not return.
Assemblywoman Vicki Dooling departed because her husband of 50 years died early Sunday, and Assemblyman John Moore checked into the hospital later that day with chest pains.
It wasn’t clear until late Monday, but those real-life intrusions into the Carson City bubble doomed a bill that national Republican leaders and 2016 White House hopefuls were watching very closely, one...
A measure.that would break up the Clark County School District, jammed through a few minutes before sine die in the Senate, has raised concerns among financial experts and rating agencies.
Whether this will give Gov. Brian Sandoval, a supporter of the concept, pause befroe signing it, and whether the governor believes he owes it to sponsor David Gardner, who voted for his tax plan, remains to be seen. But three items I have obtained indicate the concerns -- one a letter from respected bond...
Welcome to the Weekly Report.
This week:
1. Insiders on: Best/worst chairmen
2. Insiders on: Most influential legislator
3. Smartest/dumbest moves of the week
A special thanks this week to my insiders, who took a break from sine die countdown to answer my questions. Great, insightful stuff as usual, with some amazed at the Assembly not taking the vote on taxes Saturday night, dispensing kudos to Michael Roberson (especially, even from those who do not like him – better to be feared...
COUNTDOWN CLOCK
7:45 AM, Monday: The Senate is scheduled to vote on the tax package at 9 AM. I doubt it will happen because the Legislative Commission is slated to meet at 8 AM. (Who else thinks this is goofy?)
I expect 18-3 (when Debbie Smith and Tick Segerblom return) and then a signing ceremony later today (or maybe tomorrow), with "New Nevada" mentions aplenty.
The presidential; primary bill remains in limbo, and it may have problems if John Moore does not return. Even Lt. Gov. Mark...
So says results in Senate Ditrsict 5, which is where Democrat Joyce Woodhouse resides. The survey, conducted by Billy Rogers, who helped the GOP take the Senate, is telling for all lawmakers.
To wit:
