Good morning, everyone. Very interesting interview Wednesday with ex-Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge (link below) in which he did a slow burn on the White House scandals, went off on the DOJ on the AP records search and also lambasted Congress on guns. Worth a look. Ridge also spoke at an event for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, which also featured appearances by former Govs. Bob Miller and Richard Bryan. And both kept their remarks brief, which was the most shocking part of the ...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: An exclusive with ex-Homeland Security boss Tom Ridge; update from Carson City DAYS UNTIL THE REGULAR SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE ENDS: 19 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2014: 538 DAYS UNTIL THE TEEN CAN AFFECT THE POLITICAL WORLD: 71       Good morning, everyone. Rushing today because I have a busymorning. First, I’m honored to be moderating a panel for the U.S. Global Leadership Council. It features former Homeland...
Good morning, everyone. I still can’t get over the talking points scandal that is consuming the political world. No, I’m not, ahem, talking about Benghazi. I mean, the Democrats’ TAX talking points in Carson City. You’ve seen them, right? February: PROMISE THE WORLD March: IGNORE ROBERSON AND THE MARGINS TAX April: PROMISE IT’S COMING ANY DAY May: TALK ABOUT DOING AN INTERIM STUDY If that’s not scandalous, what is? Meanwhile, of course, the governor has had the same talking points, with...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: We'll see. DAYS UNTIL THE REGULAR SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE ENDS: 21 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2014: 540 DAYS UNTIL THE TEEN CAN AFFECT THE POLITICAL WORLD: 73       Good morning, everyone. Spent the weekend in Boston for my brother’s surprise 50th birthday and soaked in the greatness of that city. I could provide a list of what a city such as Boston has that nowhere in Nevada does, but it would just depress...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: We'll see. DAYS UNTIL THE REGULAR SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE ENDS: 24 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2014: 543 DAYS UNTIL THE TEEN CAN AFFECT THE POLITICAL WORLD: 76       Good morning, everyone. The gaming numbers out this morning(win up 7 percent in March (13 percent on the Strip), revenues up almost 10 percent in April) will be fodder for Gov. Sunny to radiate optimism and will make it tougher for Democrats to present...
Good morning, everyone. Up in Carson City with only 25 days left in my 26th year covering the Legislature and I have a disturbing sense of déjà vu. No, not necessarily all the way back to 1987, when it was all about hospital cost-containment. But the budget issues – education, mental health, tax policy – have changed very little, with few out-of-the-box solutions proposed. I suppose the exception is talk of taxing mining, which previously occurred in----1989 (and began in that 1987 session)....
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: Legislative stuff. DAYS UNTIL THE REGULAR SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE ENDS: 26 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2014: 545 DAYS UNTIL THE TEEN CAN AFFECT THE POLITICAL WORLD: 78       Good morning, everyone. I’m winging my way to Carson thismorning, hoping to be greeted with the same enthusiasm that enveloped Nick Cage on Tuesday. I expect rose petals in the hallway and fawning over my oeuvre. I bet the Gang of 63 especially...
Good morning, everyone. It’s not every day that one senator calls another “a schoolyard bully” on the floor. It’s even more infrequent that the Senate majority leader does it to the next president of the United States. But that’s what happened Monday. The latest Reidism doesn’t even surprise anyone, does it? And here’s the secret: I bet a lot of his colleagues, as always, loved Reid for saying aloud what they will barely whisper. By the way, Reid’s comment came on the six-year anniversary of...
Good morning, everyone. Confession time from the weekend: Yes, I enjoyed “Iron man 3,” as I became part of the second-largest opening in movie history. Yes, it was loud and silly and yet somehow still Marvelous. (It helped that The Teen actually was willing to go to a movie with me.) And, of course, any movie with the great Guy Pearce and the incomparable Ben Kingsley can’t be all bad. (I also saw “Disconnect,” a true must-see movie, dear Flashees, but prepare to be disturbed.) Speaking of...
Good morning, everyone. In 2011, it was way too late, on Day 88, that Democrats presented their tax and spending plan. It made a lot of sense, but it never had any chance. It was stillborn. It quickly disappeared. Why do I bring this up? Because Thursday was Day 88 of Session ’13. And still, in the session that was going to be DIFFERENT, we still have no plan from the Democrats, even though we were promised one early – or at least by this week! So why don’t we have a plan? Because, as one...
